For the first time in 30 years, 2017 will see a full marathon hit the streets of Southampton. The ABP Southampton Half Marathon and 10k road races have gained in popularity over the last three years. This year #TeamSSJ have almost 35 runners joining the races happening throughout the City Centre on Sunday 23rd April.
Like many people undertaking these races this year, a huge number of the people joining Team SSJ have only started running to participate in a sponsored run for a charity close to their hearts and we would like to give them the encouragement they deserve; particularly as they arrive back in town, after crossing the Itchen, to the chants of “You Beat the Bridge”.
SSJ have a mile of the course to look after, from the Itchen Bridge Approach, and also over Central Bridge. The race organisers will make a donation to SSJ for every team of MileMakers we can provide, and so we are hoping to find as many people as possible to join us on the sidelines and cheer TeamSSJ (and all the other runners) on.
So, can you join us on Sunday 23rd April and provide a cheer squad?
What will I need to do?
You need to be available in Southampton from around 9am until 2pm. We will need as many people as possible to help us, particularly between 10am and 1pm when the majority of runners will be passing through our MileMaker zone. Please let us know if you’re interested but can’t manage the whole timeslot available.
In being a Milemaker you will help make the race a more enjoyable day for everyone, however, this is an important job and you will need to help ensure the other spectators are not obstructing the course and making it dangerous for those participating as well as cheer on all the runners as they pass through our Mile zone.
In return for joining us, you will receive a commerative MileMaker T-shirt and a lunch will provided. You’re encouraged to bring chairs, signs, noise makers- make it a real day out and encourage the 10,000 people signed up to compete as they approach the end of their races.
How do I sign up and be a Milemaker?
Some of Team SSJ have been in training for months to complete this race and they will be making a real difference to vulnerable, local people.
If you would like to join us in showing appreciation for their training and also help SSJ raise more money to support our work with people facing homelessness in Hampshire, please fill out the form below!
