On Saturday 12th August ten brave SSJ supporters undertook the massive personal challenge of abseiling down the side of the iconic Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth.
This is the first time TeamSSJ has participated in the Spinnaker Tower abseil and we are so proud of everyone who attended and conquered the heights of the tower on the day!
In typical English fashion the August weather was sadly not full of brilliant sunshine, with the wind and overcast conditions adding another element to the task, however all spirits were high once their descents were complete!
One of our participants Colin, previously told us why he wanted to do the abseil here and we spoke to SSJ Day Rehabilitation volunteer Debra, after the abseil, to discuss her experience. She told us:
The abseil is from a height of 110m! It was an experience of a lifetime! When I went up to the top of the tower I could feel the build up of adrenaline rush through me. Once I started the descent down the tower it was quite hard work but exhilarating and exciting at the same time.
I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would most definitely do it again. The support that I had from family, friends and colleagues was overwhelming and encouraging. If you have a head for heights then I would encourage anyone to have a go!
We’d like to congratulate Debra, Jo, Colin, Michelle, Leonie, Jill, Diane, John, Kim and Charlotte on their achievement and thank them so much for undertaking this challenge for SSJ and being the first TeamSSJ members to abseil the Spinnaker Tower for us.
A Big Thank You
We would also like to thank everyone who sponsored the team. So far, they have raised an amazing £3700 (including Gift Aid) which will all go towards helping us to continue to support thousands of vulnerable and homeless people in Hampshire, every day.
BUT! It’s not too late to donate! You can still show them appreciation for their efforts by following the links to their individual pages above, or by heading to our team JustGiving page and making a donation. Thank you!
