Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Christmas Shoebox Appeal 2016

shoebox2A small shoebox could have a huge impact on someone facing homelessness this holiday season.

In addition to our Christmas ‘Give a Dinner appeal‘ this year, and in response to our successful appeal last year, which you can read about here, we are asking people to prepare a shoebox of gifts for someone in Hampshire facing homelessness this Christmas.

We’ve provided this handy little list of suggestions to help you put together a really welcome gift for the people we are supporting at this time. All of the people receiving gift boxes are adults or young adults over 16 years of age.

This list is not exclusive or exhaustive. Please pick and chose contents that fit your own time commitments and budget:

Toiletries of all sorts are always needed; shampoo/conditioner, shower gel, wet wipes, toothpaste/toothbrushes, mouthwash, vaseline/lip balm, sanitary products, flannels, razors, shaving foam, handcream, hair brushes & bands, etc.

‘Treat’ items such as chocolates, sachets of drinks/cup a soup, biscuits, maybe items such as a book, a notepad and pen, a torch, batteries, mobile phone chargers, travel first aid kits.

Other small items such as ear plugs, eye masks, small towels, hat/gloves/scarves and underwear – particularly socks! (Underwear must be new, with tags, please).

household items

Essential Household Items

Household essential items – Toilet roll, washing powder, washing up liquid & sponges, cleaning sprays and cloths, teatowels.

A number of the boxes provided will be delivered to people we support who are in their own supported accommodation, but still vulnerable to homelessness, or people moving on from our hostels into their own accommodation. Donating household items, such as these, are really appreciated. They help people to stretch their money a little further whilst they are still taking the first steps to transform their lives.

A Christmas/Holidays Card

A Christmas card – it would be nice if the person receiving the box could know who you are and why you wanted to send them a gift at Christmas. Please do not give out any personal identifying information.

For a lot of people who are homeless, Christmas is a particularly isolating time. It means a great deal to the people we support to know that people like you are thinking of them during the festive season.

We currently support 3,000 people across Hampshire and will be able to distribute these gifts to people facing homelessness, throughout the County, of which, around 70% of the people we support are men.

You may wish to consider whether your gift is for a male, female or unisex and label the shoebox accordingly.  We’ve made this label for you to complete,  if you would like to fill this in to send with your shoebox.

We will be taking delivery of Christmas Shoeboxes, or items donated for Christmas to be made-up into shoeboxes, from MONDAY 17th OCTOBER until MONDAY 19TH DECEMBER

WE ARE A SMALL TEAM SO IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED IF ALL SHOEBOXES COULD BE DELIVERED TO OUR HEAD OFFICE in Southampton, 9-5 Monday to Thursday, or 9-4.30 on Friday (until December 19th 2016)

Or if outside office hours boxes can be delivered to one of our hostels in:

Southampton: 10, Southampton Street, SO15 2ED

Portsmouth: All Saints, 2 All Saints’ St, Portsmouth PO1 4QA

If you run out of time to prepare a shoebox, don’t panic. You can still make a huge difference to someone facing homelessness this Christmas by choosing to Give a Dinner for just £12.

If you have any questions regarding either appeal, please contact:

We were overwhelmed that our 2015 Shoebox Appeal meant around 300 vulnerable people we support received a generous box of gifts, over Christmas.  Thank you so much to everyone who donated! Read reactions from staff and recipients on our ‘Shoebox Appeal: The Result’ post!
