Volunteering

Volunteers helping with a gardening project

SSJ was established in 1972 by a group of volunteers who were passionate about helping homeless people in Southampton. Volunteers still play an essential role in our work, helping us to provide the best possible support to homeless and vulnerable people in the Hampshire area.

‘I have really enjoyed my time here at St James, and feel I have gained a valuable experience of working in an office environment…I have a real sense of accomplishment. Working here has really opened my eyes to different ways of life.’

If you would like to get involved, there are lots of ways to do so!

Volunteering opportunities

Fundraising

There is always plenty to do in our fundraising department, whatever area of fundraising you are interested in. Whether you would like to write applications to charitable trusts on our behalf, contact local businesses to ask for their support, enter information into our database or even stuff envelopes, we would really appreciate your help.

‘Really wanting to make fundraising my career, volunteering with the Society of St James’ fundraising team gave me real insight and valuable experience! I can’t recommend volunteering highly enough.’

DIY and gardening

SSJ now has a wide range of housing projects, and this means that there is always a house or garden in need of a makeover. If you enjoy DIY or gardening, or if you are part of a group that is interested in helping us out in this way, we’d love to hear from you.

‘It’s great to do something where you can see the difference it’s making, and we know how much it helps out! It was really good fun into the bargain, despite the hard work! I’d definitely come and do it again!’
