SSJ has teamed up with Southampton FC’s Saints Foundation to use sport as a catalyst for change.
Saints4Sport offers free educational, sport and employment support activities to adults (18+) who are affected by or care for, persons with complex issues such as criminality, substance misuse, homelessness and mental health.
The project has created a structured timetable of activities, which include but are not limited to – gym sessions, cycling, Tai Chi, golf, fishing and of course, football.
Alongside physical activities, the project continuously develops a variety of training and education pathways for service users, with courses such as Health and Social Care, First Aid, Stewarding, Criminology and Customer Service available. This alongside their employment contract with the Premier Inn, has allowed a number of clients to secure full and part time work.
Working in close partnership with the criminal justice system, approved premises and supporting agencies – Saints4Sport’s timetable is also used as a compulsory requirement of engagement for Integrated Offender Management (IOM) service users and/or those with a Drug Rehabilitation Requirement (DRR).
At the time of the 2016/2017 Annual Report, over a 10 month period Saints4Sport had resettled 35 ex-offenders into the community. These included:
– 22 from the Integrated Offender Management house
– 6 from HMP Winchester
– 24 from approved premises
Saints4Sport has changed drug treatment in Southampton for the better. We now have something positive to offer our service users, something that they really want to do.
